SWING THE BIG-EARED RABBIT

Publisher: Dutton

From the West Virginia mountain country, a first novel which is indigenous, sensitive, and understanding of the adolescent, his first ambitions, desires and disillusion. Arteis Collina, shy, inarticulate, ambitious, is accepted by the nearby Mission School. There, even under the nos of stern, self righteous Dr. Peabody, he comes up against the faculty and student indiscretions, -- his brother's carryings on with Stella, the kitchen girl; Millie Dornell, his teacher, whose with another teacher make fruity gossip; Millie's seduction of Artnis, which brings about her discharge and Art expulsion, thus blocking future chances at education. Nicely handled -- aware -- realistic, but not for everyone.
