A quietly worthwhile and definitely masculine story that portrays Ted J an agent's clerk before the war, as he goes through the invasion, into France and many, remains with the British Army of Occupation. Through him, and through the with whom he is associated, their actions and thoughts during small excitement, large the disintegration they suffer is explored, their bewilderment when faced anger, despair and hatreds is presented. Ted, through his own and others' grews into the realization of the forces, emotions, ideologies that are to England, and his motherless daughter, with hope tempered by greater pity sadness. A keen, feeling picture of people in flux.
