KIRKUS REVIEW

A scholarly and somewhat ponderous account of the history of alchemy based on extensive research in the literature of the subject. The author has exhausted his material -- and, unconcerned with the problem of selection, has produced a large volume weighted with footnotes. It is intended for at least a semi-technical audience, its avowed purpose is to bring to the ""wearied servants of the laboratory"" a comprehensive outline of chemical history -- and for such it may have appeal. At the outside its field is highly specialized, very limited.
