John Langstaff has chosen the gayest, funniest verses of Dan Emmett's ""classic"" banjo dance tune of 120 years ago and given them over to the magical drawing board of Joe Krusch. The rollicking words and bouncing spirit of this jolly frontier ditty are captured to perfection by these singing illustrations. The colors -- luminous golds and reds, muted greens and blues- are in sweet harmony also. Ol' Dan Tucker -- riding a billy goat, leading a hound, combing his hair with a wagon wheel, sticking his head in a peckerwood's hole -- becomes a memorable character for modern youngsters largely due to the gifted style of Joe Krusch. Ideal for story hour as well as for individual gift items.
