KIRKUS REVIEW

A second, and equally successful, episode in the life of Lew Archer, West Coast private eye, as well as conscience, accounts for his unmasking not only the blackmailing the young Mrs. endures but the killing of her domineering mother-in-law. That there are other murders on the way, that a fight for oil property involves dirty people and dirty deeds, only sparks off Archer to ventilate the ugly mess. Steel-cold tough.
