Told tongue-in-cheek, this piratical farce has almost a Gilbert and Sullivan air. Tom is the cabin boy who sails under Captain Pugwash, aboard The Black Pig. The only thing that really worried Captain Pugwash was the danger of meeting Cut-throat Jake, a bristly bearded bandanna-ed pirate so fierce that the very thought of him made Captain Pugwash want to give up sailing and take to market gardening instead. How Tom saved the day when Cut-throat Jake lured Captain Pugwash with a decoy treasure ship is highly entertaining nonsense which most small children will like enough to play pirate later. The rollicking illustrations of the cowardly Captain and the tattered cabin boy are funny, fierce and exciting by turns. Sea-going silliness that is fun to look at, fun to read aloud and moderately challenging reading for second graders.
