Dr. Rosenbaum, an oncologist of San Francisco's Mount Zion, is that exceptional doctor who deals holistically with cancer--the patient and the disease. He believes that the informed casualty has the best chance of combatting it and extending his life, or what's left of it, rewardingly--particularly since in recent years the survival incidence is more encouraging--one in three rather than one in five. He also works in supportive conjunction with the family as will be apparent in the various cases he has documented here dealing with the reactions of different kinds of patients, their fear, depression,discomfiture--particularly in relation to the outside world (""Fardels I can bear, fools I won't"" said one of them). He discusses briefly the questions of hospitalization versus home care, the contributions of many social service agencies and the assorted programs available, as well as the role of the clergy, the nurse, the volunteer. A quod erat demonstrandum of the more that can be done through personalized intervention to counterattack a disease which is as disabling emotionally as it is physically.
