THE SURPRISE PICNIC

With his usual alternate half-pages leading you on, Goodall has a fussily dressed Mama cat and two kittens row off to an island picnic. But the half pages are just a gimmick here, concealing/revealing no unexpected developments, and though there is a surprise when the picnic-table rock becomes a turtle who walks away with the lunch, the rest is a tamer version of Paddy Pork's Holiday (1976)--with the rowboat drifting off, a storm blowing in, and the cats flying away under umbrella power and landing on a seaside cottage where an outdoor tea party is hastily convened. Pale.
