A China treaty port, under Japanese surveillance, is background for trouble in the U S Consulate, when an American and a Chinese are found dead. Local and international angles complicate the story unduly, and sub-plots relating to opium smuggling, war lords, gambling, woman trouble give you your money's worth. Not top ranking as a whodunit, but good reading.
