THE ARTIST AND THE COUNTRY HOUSE by John Steigman

THE ARTIST AND THE COUNTRY HOUSE

By

Pub Date: May 22nd, 1950
Publisher: Scribner

A very attractive collection of paintings of English country houses compiled with a different and worthwhile purpose. As the author's short entertaining text explains, the distinct genre of painting, house portraiture, is presented here chronologically from its cruder artisan beginnings through its fully developed artistic place today as represented in the work of such artists as John Piper. The social implications of the development of this painting are also pointed out in the text and easily recognizable in the examples chosen. All 96 reproductions are in blank and white and historical notes on the houses represented are included. Tasteful binding and format -- for a limited market.
