A FRAGMENT OF AUTOBIOGRAPHY

By

Publisher: Harper

This is sub titled The Fun of Writing the Inside Books. For ""Fun"" substitute Work Planning Organization. Travelling and so on ad Infinitum. Fun- John Gunther makes of it. Never for a moment does one lose sight of the zest, the enthusiasm, the interest involved. But here if one ever doubted it- is the record from the inception of the through the advance preparation in reading and study, in research and interviewing, in laying the groundwork and planning the itinerary-all this before visiting the area designated by the project, or seeing people on the ground, or writing a line. Financial problems haunted the Gunthers' footsteps, despite good advances, and various magazine commitments (which took from the time dedicated to the main task, but often helped crystallize the thinking and the writing subsequently. This is a fascinating analysis- certainly (even at risk of a cliche) an inside job, and of equal interest to the outsider who wants to know how it happens- and to the insider who recognizes successive steps, techniques, procedures- and achievement. Fun writing? Fun reading.
