HISTORY OF THE CURE OF SOULS by John T. McNeill

HISTORY OF THE CURE OF SOULS

By

Publisher: Harper

This book belongs in the field of church history and will be of interest primarily to specialists in that field. Professor McNeill of Union Theological Seminary has devoted many years to the preparation of this study and it gives every evidence of careful and thorough preparation and scholarly competence. It covers a vast amount of ground, as it deals with what man has done for man over the ages to put him at peace with himself, his neighbors and his God. Beginning with the wise men of Israel and the Greek philosophers, Professor McNeill shows how the cure of souls was effected in the medieval church, in the various branches of Protestantism and in modern Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. The final chapter deals with the whole emphasis upon psychiatry and personal counselling as instruments in the cure of souls. The author has no axe to grind, no thesis to defend. He is content to record what has happened and what is happening as man endeavors to help his individual fellows in the name of religion.
