BOOKS OF FAITH AND POWER

This book gives us a creative interpretation of six great books which are basic in the Christian tradition, namely: On Christian Liberty by Martin Luther; Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin; The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity by Richard Hooker; The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan; A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life by William Law; and John Wesley's Journal. The author is Professor of Church History at Union Theological Seminary, New York, and is well qualified to introduce his readers to these religious classics. Professor McNeill admits that some readers will be content with such acquaintance with the content and purpose of these books as may be gained by reading this study. However, he is hopeful that many will be persuaded by a perusal of this book to pursue the study of the originals. With respect to each work studied, Dr. McNeill takes into consideration the purpose which motivated the author, his character, the literary and philosophical elements in his works, and the historical and religious setting of the classics. Students of Church history, clergymen and others interested in their Protestant heritage will welcome this thoughtful and scholarly book.
