A pot boiler -- bears little relation to the work Foote does best, fiction based on his own interest in sport (Dumbbell of Brookfield, The Wedding Gift, etc.) This is a third rate story of a tilt between middle age (in the shape of a playwright) and youth (in the shape of his one time sweetheart's son), for the favor of a modern girl. Her weapons are so unfamiliar to middle age, that he falls a victim to his own snare. Slight -- and carelessly written. S. E. P. serialization.
