The fourth edition of Howard's standard reference now covers music in the United States from the colonial era through 1964. The author devoted ten years to revising his work: more than 50% of the text has been rewritten and reset. Additions include nearly a hundred composers risen to prominence in the last decade; scores of new titles in the bibliography. The treatment of both serious and popular contemporary music has been altered. The listings by composer place them biographically and note some or all of their works, with some analysis of major pieces. Comprehensive rather than in-depth presentation, very accessible.
