THE OLD SOUTH

Pub Date: June 1st, 1968
Publisher: Time-Life

A quick/slick study of the Old South in the Time-Life regional series--taking in five Southern states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina. The comments on the sense of difference, of climate, of ""a special and continuing regional experience."" also include the ""grimly anticipated surrender to full equality"" of the races and that ""the regional ego remains in splendid shape."" Ante and post bellum, the long-lived ""racial compact"" now being blitzed (mention of the 1960 sit-ins but not the 1956 bus boycott, of several deaths but not the Philadelphia three or Medgar Evers); the rise of Republicanism, the ""anomaly"" of Atlanta, the Florida boom, growth and change elsewhere, the literary Renaissance since 1920 come into view. Picture essays correlate and complement. Appendices include suggested tours, museums and galleries, local festivals and events, etc. as per the other volumes of a basically accessible series.
