This is really quite different from any of the other books on the Caribbean -- and very refreshing it is. Not a travel book, in the sense of what to see and where to get the best liquor. Not a book dealing with the ""atmosphere"" of the islands. But a book which gives one a better understanding of the history and background of the islands and the people than any other I know. A perfect groundwork book for home consumption before starting on a Caribbean trip -- to be combined, let us say, with the Early book and De Leeuw's books. Vandercook writes exceedingly well, and the book is grand reading.
