TRAVELING WOMAN

The title is- quite obviously- a play on the concept of the ""traveling man""- and night well be put in the plural, for there are three women involved, who- with their respective husbands-play a British sexual version of musical chairs....Wain, says one reviewer, represents ""the golden age of satire"" -- he has won important recognition. But Traveling Woman would scarcely seem to bear out either prior claim to fame. There is a kind of slickly contrived manipulation of surface characters, so undistinguished as to be readily confused in the reader's mind. They offer pat labels, perhaps, but no depth perception. The humor is orced, and the situations dull and often in exceedingly bad taste.
