PRAYERS FOR THE SPIRIT

There are many clergymen and theologians who can write effective books about prayer. There are not many who can write prayers that are beautifully phrased and usable. The author is one of those rare individuals who can translate his own prayer life to the printed page. As custodian of the Book of Common Prayer of the Protestant Episcopal Church, Dr. Suter has done much to enrich that invaluable manual of worship with modern prayers which have nevertheless the dignified cadences of the best English devotional literature. As rector of the Church of the Epiphany in New York, he has made that church preeminently a place of prayer. The prayers contained in this little volume are appropriate either for private or corporate devotions. They have been selected with the spiritual needs of the present time in view. In addition to prayers intended for use in the recurring seasons and experiences of men, there is a section devoted to war-time prayers which includes prayers for those in the armed forces, for obscure workers, for those who remain at home, for our enemies, for sufferers, for the bereaved, concluding with a litany entitled A War Time Supplication. For all Christians this book would be a thoughtful and appreciated Lenten gift.
