Professor John Bowman has published in this book the result of thirty years studying and teaching of the familiar portion of Jesus' teaching commonly called the Sermon on the Mount. Special attention is given to the understanding of the Greek idiom and Aramaic lying behind the English translation. Jesus' use of poetry is one of the keys to a deeper understanding of his teaching, Dr. Bowman asserts and demonstrates, and he concludes that, as herald of the new day, Jesus embodied in his own person the gospel of the Kingdom of God which he preached. In this lay the power of Jesus' teaching and ministry. Interesting comparative use is made too of the new material found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. This up-to-date and thoroughgoing study will be especially helpful to Protestant ministers who wish to keep abreast of the times in their Gospel studies and their own preaching.
