Jon Cleary's native Australia is used as a kind of counterpoint in his sixth novel. A group of people are assigned to New Guines, which is being run as an Australian protectorate under the U.N. and each reacts individually to his nostalgia, his resentment, his personal identification with Australia. The central theme revolves around the boss man Narve and his dedication to this area. Highlighted by incidents, adventures and tragedies, as Narvo wages his battle for fair treatment of the natives, this is a holding tale.
