Latimer's followers expect topnotch, somewhat hard-boiled mystery stories from him. Now he comes along with a well-blended mixture of sentiment, adventure, romance and hard-hitting narrative. Hemingway technique -- monosyllabic dialogue, hardness, keen perception, mellowed with tenderness, wistfulness and honesty. On African safari, three people learn new values, meet passion on new grounds, meet adventure and danger, and rebuild their lives. Flashbacks give wider scope to the story than the more pattern of the hunt background permits. Good scoring of mounting tension, with something of the quality of Four Frightened People.
