For intelligent amateurs this charts a reading course in science for the purpose of widening scientific interest, promoting scientific hobbies, etc. From armchair to active participation, from the dilatory to the concentrated. What kinds of books to read, how to read them, how to study and apply them; interspersed with chapters on the individual sciences, are general chapters on the approaches to personal appreciation. The material is arranged under three main headings, -- facts of the universe, things and life. The author reviews the universal sciences, includes some of the new sciences (synthetics, plastics etc.) A wide range, which cannot fail to catch the imagination of even the veriest neophyte.
