Dr. Westlake, physician and amateur criminologist, and his brat of a daughter, small Dawn, are holidaying at a New England resert at the season's end. A strange assortment of guests remain, including the mysterious, silent and beautiful Mrs. Fanshawe, her husband and little Bobby, and the governess who poses for Mr. Fanshawe; a Uriah Heepish undertaker on holiday; a spinster, Miss Heywood; the inn keeper, the life guard, and the servants. Three murders, presumably performed by a maniac, and obviously linked, a disturbed graveyard; a legend of a missing black diamond and a recently dead jewel thief, are drawn into the assiduous investigations of Dr. Westlake. But it takes a hurricane and the two brats, to complete the solution. Good yarn, which manages to throw the reader off the trail time and again.
