An unusual book with varied appeal. Marais is well known as a collector of African folk song and story lore, and he has combined these arts in a charming collection of stories told by his old Hottentot nurse, Koos. Strange characters, warm gentle people, a new fantasy and a true folk quality will satisfy the child's need for fantasy and imaginative tales, and the adult reader who is interested in authentic folk material. Libraries -- both public and school, may find it of more permanent value than bookshops, but the extraordinary drawings by Henry Stalhut give it a definite merchandise value for the discriminating purchaser. One could wish for a more durable binding.
