Christian, Jewish, Chinese, Mohammedan and Hindu holidays are some of the nationals Mr. Gaer enumerates and he does it in such a way as to tie in religious significance and heighten meaning by telling the stories behind the festivals. In the chapter on China, he starts with the Yang and Yin principles, explains a little of the original nature worship and arrangement of seasons and moves on to the overlay of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. The Jewish Chanukah is backgrounded with the story of the Maccabees and the Passover with the days in Egypt and the coming of Moses. There is even, for the Mohammedan pilgrimages, a peek inside the Kaaba at Mecca. A fairly broad gauged book adults should enjoy too.
