This biography of Field Marshal Lord Garnet Wolseley will help to restore his fame from tat partial eclipse which has obscured him. The British have long used his name as a synonym for super-efficiency in the phrase ""All Sir Garnet."" Sir Garnet was driven by a lust for glory and believed that the ""best possible way to get ahead in the army was a try to get killed every time he had the chance."" At 20 in 1853, he put this belief into action in the Second Burma War and became a lieutenant. He fought at Sevastopol as a captain and went on to India where he became the youngest Colonel in the British Army at 26. He fought in every lost corner of the Empire and eventually became Commander-in-Chief and ""the father of the modern British army."" Well written and thoroughly absorbing.
