A book for men who like out of the way corners of the earth -- possibly for the Lightship market and certainly for the readers of Northern Lights (Oxford). The story of three men of different temperaments, voluntarily marooned on a small island in the Arctic for a year -- a study in emotional adventure in isolation. Six months were thin the thread of endurance -- growing tension, hate -- engendered atmosphere, suspicion, jealousy -- and outside bitter storms and bone-boring cold. Crack-up -- death -- and eventually a friendship between the survivors. Another tie-up for market appeal is South of the Sun (John Day).
