VIRGINIE, OR THE DAWNING OF THE WORLD

A miniminiscule little story (very much on the order of A Dressing of Diamond but without the benefit of Freeling's name) in which Virginie, four years old, goes off hand in hand with a strange man, very strange, who once had a little girl just like her and who takes her to a house, tells her stories, plays the piano for her -- another unfinished symphony -- and finally takes her home safe and sound. Occasionally lightened with a trellis of description -- ""Dawn trembled in the tops of the poplar trees"" -- or darkened with the unhappy thoughts of this disturbed man -- ""The burden of childhood. Every child holds the future of the world"" -- but it's all over before you have time to clear your throat.
