PLAY-OFF THRILLS

The authors find ""sheer drama"" in playoff contests of baseball, football, hockey, track and golf: ""The seconds ticked away harshly--each one piercing deeper into Johnny's heart--as the Giants ran out the game on the ground."" Gliches of hanging aside, the competitions described are inherently dramatic; the athletes' attitudes toward the events, although too often developed through made-up dialogue, inform and invigorate the action. Box scores, rosters of teams and playing records complete the line-up-an uneven book with many memorable plays and personalities to offset the overwrought moments.
