A decorative and at all times decorous pursuit of evil, this once again follows with fastidious detail the story of an innocent, betrayed by her benevolence. Barbara Lawne, orphaned but wealthy at 27, finds her first chance at romance in Francis Shermandine, whose rather lethargic inclinations toward matrimony are stimulated by his uncle, Sir Timothy. Learning, at her father's death, of the existence of an illegitimate half sister, Mignonette, Barbara gives way to an impulse, brings Mignonette to England where she soon displaces Barbara. Although loved by Francis, Mignonette decides to marry rian Sir Timothy, who offers greater wealth and position. With the death of Fra Barbara returns to Sir Timothy's, where she finds Mignonette, her mother, and her former lover in command, and Barbara, susceptible to the attentions of Etienne Berteaucourt, fatucously signs away her fortune. Warned by others, it is Mignonette who finally her life- but cannot save herself...Once again, for her audience, an ornamental of dark passions, driving deviltry.
