A professor at the University of Dublin tells the story of microbiology, and manages to divest it of every vestige of glamor and general lay appeal. Purely a book for the student, there's a consistent classroom tone to it, both in content and style. First, definition, identification, cultivation, use of microscope, etc.; next, microbes in relation to disease, with the histories of the men who contributed most to eliminating the big scourges (Koch, Pasteur, Lister, etc.). Finally, the transmission of microbes, practical application to everyday life. Can't see bookstore sale.
