KIRKUS REVIEW

Granted that the author is the winner of the Polish Academy Prize and a nominee for the Nobel Prize, this first volume of a trilogy of the Galician peasant at war is appallingly tedious reading for American tastes. This volume deals extensively and meticulously with every detail of the mobilization of Peter, illiterate, naive, loutish, all traced with infinite pains. Sharply limited market.
