THE DOOR IN THE CLOSET

This is a difficult story to place. It starts out like a more or less routine family story, with likable children and the kinds of happenings that make one feel part of the picture and on intimate terms with them all. Then -- out of the blue -- one is in the midst of Alice-in-Wonderland life, with characters from real life all mixed in with dreams of astounding clarity and detail. Then the switch back to everyday existence. This see-saw makes the book unnecessarily complicated and splits its appeal. I don't believe it will click with either realistic or imaginative children. Josephine Bacon's name is good for some adult sale, but I don't think she brings this off.
