An indisputably appealing romance all about Viola whose bold, beautiful, and classy looks attract the sobriquet Duchess when she comes up to London from Leeds with her plainer friend Betsy--both shopgirls. Viola in spite of infra dig beginnings, allures all men, particularly a cosmopolitan, generous, middle-aged Count as well as of young Lord James Staffray. They have a passionately heedless affair before James is sent off to the Boor War to fight, lose an arm, and lose track of Viola who is left to bear his child. All kinds of misfortunate mistakes and spiteful acts force her into marriage with a dreadful draper, her previous employer, who puts her child in the care of an abusive woman. James finally finds her again but it is Viola, ""daft-brave"" as ever, who realizes the way of a world where she will never belong. The ladies will enjoy every high-low moment of this entertainment, head and decollete shoulders above others of its kind.
