The history of the six Lords Baltimore parallels the foundation and development of Maryland. This is a factual study of a family tree beginning with the first Lord Baltimore, George Calvert, who established the colony in 1632 and ending with the sixth Lord against whom the Assembly finally rebelled and won its freedom. Persecution of Catholics in England motivated George's trip to the New World. His son Cecil remained in England for a time, but was instrumental in strengthening the colony. A tradition of strong religious tolerance was begun and continued with each successive Governor. The activities of subsequent Lords Baltimore- Leonard, Charles, Philip- wind up a well researched history book with its background steeped in the reigns of Queen Elizabeth, King James, King Charles and the Cromwell regime. Because of its clearly defined subject, the book should have special regional appeal.
