In 1831 Josiah Gregg, a young Missourian, joined a wagon-train for Santa Fe; later he became a successful Santa Fe trader, and in 1844 published his Commerce of the an account of the Santa Fe trade and life on the Plains in the 1830's. Gregg was a born writer and possessed also a mathematician's accuracy; his great book, often reprinted, ""In its field still has no equal and few rivals"".
