WHAT IS CHARLIE DOING?

A service dog chronicles his deeds in this picture book.

Charlie, a brown goldendoodle, discusses his life working for a White human named Joy. He was born with a distinctive feature—­­­his nose—that allows him to “help humans.” With his keen sense of smell, Charlie sniffs out emotions and detects threats. For example, when he smells a “scary scent…I bark to get her attention.” Charlie shares how he adjusted to the requirements of his job, including learning to climb stairs, wear a seat belt, and sit still in public. He explains that he sports a red vest to indicate that he is a service dog. Charlie reminds readers not to approach canines with red vests in public because they are on duty, protecting their humans. Ultimately, Charlie loves assisting Joy, and even when his “vest comes off and I look like every other dog…I keep working.” Featuring a sweet, thoughtful canine protagonist, Anna’s story deftly emphasizes the important role of service animals. The tale provides a kid-friendly look at Charlie’s skill, dedication, and love for Joy. Warnes’ animated, cheerful illustrations supplement the story nicely. Charlie is endearing and somewhat shaggy. His expressive face mirrors the text. For example, when he talks about “happy scents,” he walks in the sunshine on the grass, looking prideful. When he explains “sad scents,” he stands in the darkness, appearing worried.
