The idea of smuggling a valuable painting by hiding it in a cricket bat is a specifically British but still diverting idea. And the story while it is also very British in its details, contains enough activity to interest American mystery fans. Jane and Ronnie, twelve year old twins, spend a holiday in France with their cousins Raoul and Nicole. Several unusual incidents--a Frenchman who keeps popping up looking for a missing glove, the unpleasantness of a boarder living with Ronnie's tutor, and a roving cricket bag--first set them to idly imagining some sort of intrigue, and then turn out to be important clues when a Titian painting is stolen from the Louvre. It will take a pretty elastic imagination to accept the whole chain of events; nevertheless the children are a nice bunch and the pace does keep up.
