DIALOGUES IN AMERICANISM

This is a collection of three debates that took place in Pasadena, California in 1964 between 3 prominent liberals and 3 equally prominent conservatives. It must have been something to see and hear in person, because they have retained their energy in print. Steve Allen debated William Buckley, Jr., on the Presidential powers in foreign relations. Robert M. Hutchins debated L. Brent Bozell on the power of the Supreme Court to overrule state laws. James Macgregor Burns debated Wilmoore Kendall on the responsibility to enact laws promised during national elections. The points of contention are not decided but they are well ventilated. The bonus for student debaters is the varying techniques employed.
