A picture book of the highest quality, this magnificent volume gives quite an extensive survey of Japanese sculpture covering 5000 years in the authoritative commentary by the Professor of Art History and Archaeology at International Christian University, Tokyo. The earliest, prehistoric art is represented by amazing clay figurines. Then follow the grave figures, and finally the sophisticated and intricate temple statuary of the fourteenth century. Although much is known of the Greek and Egyptian, there is abundant and painful ignorance of this highly-developed art which flourished in the Orient for thousands of years before it was even ""discovered"" by the West. Both artists and cultured readers will thrill to the beauty, strength, serenity -- and comedy -- of these ancient sculptures. Thanks to Professor Kidder's lucid commentary, they will find themselves recognizing the various influences from Korea, China, and India on the art of Japan. Four Japanese photographers, Yasukichi Iric, Ken Domon, Shihachi Fujimoto, and Manshichi Sakamoto, spent three years taking the 199 photographic studies which show the best of Japanese sculpture in the best photographic reproduction.
