Juana’s big problema will resonate with many readers, who will look forward to hearing more about this spunky Colombian...
Juana is back. This time she has to navigate the ups and downs of the changes brought on by the new person in Mami’s life.
The way she sees it, “My life is just about perfect.” She lives in Bogotá, “a city that smells of eucalyptus and fresh fruit”; she has the nicest neighbors; Mami is perfect; her abuelos are wonderful; her school “is quite good, too, though math and English are hard for me to learn.” And of course, there is Lucas, “the most perfect perro in the whole entire world.” Lately, though, her life is “a little less perfect.” Mami has changed her hairstyle and is singing a lot, and Juana is spending more time with her relatives and less with Mami. Turns out, “Mami has a new friend. His name is Luis.” As with its predecessor, the Belpré-winning Juana & Lucas (2016), the story is told from Juana’s point of view with humor and drama. The typeset, text, and illustrations are playfully intertwined, with a sprinkling of italicized Spanish words throughout. Medina’s cartoon-style illustrations done in ink and watercolor are vibrant and full of movement, beautifully capturing the full range of Juana’s conflicting emotions as Luis becomes a part of their lives.
Juana’s big problema will resonate with many readers, who will look forward to hearing more about this spunky Colombian girl’s life. (Fiction. 5-8)Pub Date: May 14, 2019

A sweet holiday venture, laced with important insights into embracing change.
An accident involving a beloved lantern has a young girl of Chinese descent hustling for a replacement for Lunar New Year.
The whole house is bustling with preparations for the two-week holiday, and Amy Wu adores it all. “The food, the decorations…but most of all, Amy loves the traditions!” Tonight is the Lantern Festival. To observe the first full moon of the new year, her family takes out a special lantern belonging to her father. It may look ordinary—a red oval with gold fringe—but her father explains that it helps him remember Amy’s grandmother. But disaster strikes when Amy trips coming out of the attic and smashes the lantern. Despite her father’s reassurance, she and her friends take it upon themselves to fix it. They do their best but can’t get it quite right. A stricken Amy laments that Lantern Night “won’t be the same. It won’t be extra special. It won’t be tradition.” Zhang’s enthusiastically told narrative comes to a climax as Dad explains that “sometimes traditions change, and that’s okay.” Amy, her family, and her friends, who vary in skin tone, are now fully able to appreciate the evening festivities, complete with lanterns, food, and dragon dances. With dynamic shades and composition and perfectly comedic expressions, Chua’s illustrations shine. Instructions on creating a lantern complete the story.

An honest look at motherhood in the contemporary era and a sweet tribute to the bond between mother and child.
Grammy-winning, multiplatinum singer/songwriter Rowland teams up with California teacher McKay to celebrate busy moms.
This picture book highlights a mother’s frequent longing to be with her child when life’s demands pull them apart. The story takes us through a busy Black mom’s week: She goes to work (at a construction site where she appears to be an engineer), works from home on her son’s sick day, takes him to a museum, and shares domestic duties with her Black male partner, who is a nurse. She encounters many bumps in the road that will be familiar to working parents. Each day, she gently reassures her son with a lyrical refrain: “Always with you, / Always with me, / Mommy and child / Together we’ll be.” This tender story, narrated in the voice of a mother addressing her child, pulls at the heartstrings. Liem’s digital artwork uses a warm palette and has a calming quality. The characters’ body language and heartfelt facial expressions are spot-on. This book will resonate with any mom who knows the heartache of having to say goodbye to their child or who has faced the teary-eyed frustration of a youngster experiencing separation anxiety. Young readers, on the other hand, will find solace in the reassuring narrative. (This book was reviewed digitally.)
