THE EELS' STRANGE JOURNEY

The bizarre life cycle of the eel has been the subject of much speculation and still inconclusive research, and some of both was summarized in Jacobs' Freshwater Eels. This sparer, better-looking introduction gives a very clear outline of the animal's transformation from transparent larva and tiny glass eel to the freshwater stage as a yellow eel and, lastly, the reproductive silver eel. And the simplified explanation of the journey from the Sargasso and back is followed by a tantalizing list of unanswered questions. Certainly one of the more substantial Read-and-Find-Outs, though Jacobs probably has a better fix on the age range of her potential audience.
