In describing a correspondence between a child and her grandfather, Caseley deftly outlines the girl's growth. Grandpa first writes when Annie's a new baby; as she gets older, she eagerly awaits and replies to his letters, which are written on cards that provide various openings for comments on changing times or anticipated meetings. Finally, Annie's treasured letters (she has more than 100) spark a class project. The subtext here- -the value of written communication—is disarmingly wrapped in the warmly depicted relationship between generations, nicely extended in the cheerful illustrations. (Picture book. 4-8)
