The audience for this book? Anyone who's ever hosted a slumber party, been to a slumber party, or dreams of such an event will love it. After Zoe and her mom discuss and reject a variety of birthday party ideas, Zoe decides she wants a slumber party. They make plans, send invitations, and all four of Zoe's best friends say yes. On the big night there's dinner at the corner pizzeria and a stop at the drugstore for nail polish (manicures are part of the activities). At Zoe's, the girls get into pajamas, brush their teeth, and the inevitable problems begin: sleeping arrangements, scary stories, homesickness, creepy noises, the works. Eventually all get rest at ``the best birthday party ever.'' Caseley (Mr. Green Peas, 1995, etc.) offers an affectionate look at an important rite of passage, in quirky paintings that are irresistibly childlike, fresh and full of funny details. Something of a primer on overnights (birthday and otherwise), this has loads of personality and is sure to engage. (Picture book. 5+)
