A sleuthing dairy farmer has her hands full with a lady killer.

Stella Crown is visiting her boyfriend Nick and his family in Virginia when a phone call sends her racing home to Bucks County, in Pennsylvania. Her veterinarian and friend Carla Beaumont narrowly escaped death when her truck was hijacked. The police are looking for someone who’s after drugs. Stella is pleased that Carla is recovering in the hospital, but not so pleased to meet her new boyfriend Bryan. The crime wave continues when a newly installed pastor finds her office ransacked and a nasty note telling her to go home. When one of her cows breaks a bone in her foot, Stella visits her doctor, a woman just about to take over her father’s practice, and witnesses a nasty scene with a man who doesn’t want to be treated by a female. When the doctor is found dead, Stella, suspecting that someone is targeting women in positions of power, has a talk with the local police, who consider her theory seriously. The sudden arrival of Nick, who is battling MS (The Day Will Come, 2007, etc.), makes Stella feel safer as she continues to hunt down clues that will help her identify the criminal.

A sprightly tale and a surprising ending, along with Clemens’s trademark quirky characters.
