Scoots, a four-year-old bog turtle, wakes from a winter hibernation and goes about eating, swimming, and growing in Potato Bog. He escapes detection by a raccoon and a snapping turtle, quickly digging into the mud when frightened or threatened; he breathes underwater by means of air trapped in his cloaca, and he observes bats zigzagging over the bog to capture insects, a female bog turtle laying her eggs, a bee consumed by a pitcher plant. When the weather turns cold, he once again burrows into the mud to hibernate. The double-page illustrations here are as quiet as the text, showing a few plants and animals in sharp detail while eliminating extraneous detail; in spite of the bright colors, the effect is static. Very little happens here, but the book will serve to introduce young readers to the bog environment. Index.
