KIRKUS REVIEW

When Ruthie and Mike Willet and their parents inherit Greenbar Island and go to live there, they find themselves living on a sand dune waste with no possibility of growing their own food supply. A bit of looking around unearths a mysterious sunken forest and an apparently grumpy old captain who works in it. When the ice is finally broken, the Captain shows the kids how to collect humus from the dead leaves, to make a compost pile and their problems of soil and a vegetable garden are solved.
