DUDLEY AND THE STRAWBERRY SHAKE DUDLEY IN A JAM

Dudley the dormouse has two more adventures. When strawberries are in season, he's off with a wheelbarrow just large enough for a single berry, but when he tries to harvest the pink nose of a puppy, he gets such a shaking that he retreats without berries--except those he's already eaten. His jam-making project is delayed when, having already gorged on plums, he gets stuck in his own window; a wasp sting propels him on through in time to make the jam in a marvelous machine built from a snail shell, before retiring for the winter. Unlike the Beatrix Potter books, whose diminutive size and point of view are recalled here, these are predictable and lack strong themes. But Cross' pen and watercolor illustrations are delicately precise; his combination of quaint settings, carefully observed flora and fauna, and humorous detail is charming. Slight, but diverting.
