A FEW HAPPY ONES

Three books published by Longmans have established small but enthusiastic market for Judy Van Der Veer's experiences with her stock farm (River Posture, etc.) These are further tales of the author's California ranch and her animals, -- lambe, sheep, ducks, hens and roosters, bulls, cows, helfers, calves, horses, goats, kids, dogs and cats. They complicate life but provide plenty of entertainment. Some new ones were acquired; some were lost, some were traded. There is fire, storm, marooning, bogging down, there are obstinate, unruly, appealing, gay and sad characters in her domain, and many incidents of ranching life. A tolerant, personalized recounting of her experiences.
